Familiarization Trips

GTE has several programs that let people see first-hand what the Company does to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment. One program is called Familiarization Trips (FamTrips), which involves encouraging stakeholders to visit production sites and observe the Company’s practices, particularly with respect to operations and the environment.

Since 2019, GTE has hosted 48 FamTrips in Colombia, welcoming over 1,205 people to the Company’s facilities: the Costayaco Forestry Centre, the Costayaco and Acordionero operations facilities, our fields, and the Suruma Museum. This program has proved to be effective in countering myths some people have regarding industry practices, by providing basic information about hydrocarbons, and by providing basic information on how oil operations work. Some visitors come from areas near current operations and some are from areas where GTE is planning to operate.

In 2022, Gran Tierra Energy expanded FamTrips into Ecuador, with the activities linked to complementary initiatives like training. To complement FamTrips in Ecuador, in 2024, GTE also established the Community Exchange program, as part of its approach to encourage community engagement and strengthen local leadership in the province of Sucumbíos.

These visits are designed to help communities learn about GTE’s operations, and about the different approaches other Ecuadorian communities have implemented to support long-term community development through new venues like alternative tourism. Since 2022, Gran Tierra has welcomed 195 local residents to FamTrips and Community Exchange tours.

“This FamTrip activity carried out by Gran Tierra allows us to see first-hand the environmental efforts that they implement, such as the Costayaco Forestry Centre. These projects added to other projects such as PetrolCopa make us have greater gratitude and trust towards the Company.”
